now. he's got to say to the american people what the president obama legacy may well be in years to come. and for that, you need to have a vision. i'm not sure most people in america are fully clear what that vision is. because we can't keep being a slightly negative, well, you know, things have been really bad, we're trying to make them a bit better. it's going to be a little more oomph about it, positivity and grand vision. >> i would go back to the famous caesar chavez line, yes, we can, and really inject a lot of optimism in this inaugural. the burden on the president is that in 2008, it was electric here in washington. a million people coming, our first african-american president. this time around, it's a little more humdrum. we're exhausted from the 2012 presidential election. newtown has all of us in a tizzy and angry. we've got the, you know, problems going on with fiscal cliff and a new debt crisis. so the mood is not great. the way to change it is a big, bold speech. i personally would like to see the president vote gun control, which i know you've been so helpfully out

of remaking america. >> that's how it all began for president obama. four years later, he's poised to take the oath again. but what will his second term look like? joining me now is margaret hoover and democratic strategist jamal sterns. marvin, let me start with you. obviously heavy heart, watching a democratic president about to make his second inaugural speech, but what has he got on his plate, the president, which he needs to deal with in the second term? >> not too heavy a heart, i will say. republicans want to win, but in a day of the inauguration you can be happy for the president and the country. >> i don't believe that. >> i actually am. there are plenty of us that are perfectly patriotic. he has a very big plate, a huge agenda he wants to get through and the reality of a divided congress. republicans realize they are one half of one third of the federal government and they're trying to get their expectations in check in terms of what they can do, specifically on the debt ceiling, for example. we just heard the house republicans are going to try to negotiate a short-term debt ceil

organizer. you know, for years obama said i'm still a community organizer, just at the national level. well, this was the one qualification that i think obama brought to the administration if you can even call it , liquification. he was a community organizer. he was a darn good one. absolutely. he was known by his fellow community organizers as the masters of agitation. this is important because this is the essence of how he views the world. obama bucha into a community, and he would identify an enemy for that group, for that community and she would stoke their animosity, fuel let and really generate this thanks to come anger and even hatred to get and while everybody is all riled up hating some organization or person or whatever he focuses their attention on, she ran through his agenda. no discussion, no need for any debate or discourse, that was all based on distract everybody, get them focused on some entity and then ran through whenever he wanted. that is exactly what he has done at the national level. for the past four years, they're has been no philosophical back-and-forth. no dynamic

over the years that led to his hideout and to president obama, who gave the order to go in. one year later, it is appropriate to assess where we stand in this fight. we said that it would not mark the end of al qaeda nor our resolve to destroy it. along with allies and partners, we have been unrelenting. when we assess that al qaeda of 2012, it is fair to say the united states is more secure and the american people are safer. here is why. in pakistan, al qaeda's leadership ranks of continue to suffer heavy losses. this includes one of at al qaeda's top operational planners killed one month after osama bin laden. it includes the man who was killed after succeeding al qaeda's debbie lee leader. and the man who planned attacks against the united states until his capture by pakistan's forces. with its commanders the loss of quickly, al qaeda has had trouble replacing them. this one of the making closing is we have been able to draw from documents seized at osama bin laden's compound. some of them will be published on line for the first time this week. for example, a some of the law and w

was not a balanced approach. >> it's about time they gave a little bit of something because they haven't given obama anything for four years. >> he got it. >> the reality of it is the republicans will have to come down and be serious and not just protect wealthy people and come up with some proposals and the president has got to come up with proposals, i haven't seen it on any side. martha: i agree with you and i asked steve king about that moments ago. you've got to come up with ideas, lay it out so the people can decide which side they like, what they agree with. theyer getting no meat in either of these. >> to get beat up i on the tphaort of the house by republicans in a motion vicious way. >> come on. >> you just did it. what are you talking about? you guys can never say anything nice about this guy, i don't know why. he's president of the united states, say one thing nice. martha: i'm getting very lonely at the white house and i think you guys should come over and play to card. thank you box, thank you mary catherine. bill: tanteros got a radio show, shys unavailable. reroll in mary katherine h

everything else that president obama has said for four years about his view of the muslim world and the war on terror, that they are much safer, much more likely to decide to use force to take hostages than in previous years. and i think we're seeing the evidence of it right now. martha: yeah. president obama was emphatic about the fact that he suggested this would be done, those killers would be tracked down from the benghazi raid that killed four americans. that has not happened. as we pointed out. your mind goes back to other events in the past in terms of retaliation like the uss cole for example. like the bombing at the world trade center in 1993 which we know was followed the up, you said it many times on this program, you know, they have got a lot of patience and they have a lot of time f they feel there is an opening and a window, al qaeda proved to us time and time again they will continue to strike. >> that's why this attack on a natural gas facility in algeria is significant. this is a direct attack on a critical element of algeria's economy. i think as bill said a moment ago, th
